Size
Crooked River Ranch encompasses approximately 12,000
acres. The ranch is a planned unit development, with
nearly 11,000 acres in residential sites ranging in size
from one acre to more than five acres. There are over
1,000 acres owned by the ranch association, with amenities
including a golf course, tennis courts, swimming pool,
ball field, clubhouse and several tracts of open space for
future recreational uses. Canyon palisades, deep gorges
and the clear rippling waters of the Deschutes and Crooked
Rivers form the east and west boundaries. In addition,
there are several large tracts of public land adjoining
the ranch which are administered by the Department of the
Interior. With few restrictions, these lands totaling
about 9,000 acres are open to hiking, fishing, riding,
hunting, etc..
Climate
Our high desert community rests between the Crooked River
and the Deschutes at an elevation of approximately 2,800
feet above sea level. The climate is semi-arid, with an
annual precipitation of less than nine inches per year. We
enjoy a high percentage of sunny days throughout the year.
Refreshing different weather patterns of the four distinct
seasons are common to the area.
Summer: Daytime temperatures average 80 to 90 degrees with
cool nights.
Fall: The season change offers varying temperatures from
warm summertime highs to temperatures dipping below
freezing.
Winter: Temperatures usually range from the mid to upper
40's to lows in the teens, although the mercury
occasionally drops below zero.
Spring: Temperatures range from the mid 60's in the
daytime with mid 20's at night. The winter and spring
seasons bring the majority of the annual precipitation
with occasional light snowfall or showers.
History
In 1910, when Redmond was a bustling community of 216, a
Texas oil man by the names of Gates purchased the property
from homesteaders, forming what was known for years as the
"Gates Ranch". The main ranch house, built by the Gates
family and still standing, was constructed in 1916.
Crooked River Ranch was officially registered in 1932. In
1961, the ranch was purchased by the Thomas Bell family.
It was operated as the E-Z Cattle Co. in diversified
ranching for ten years. In late 1971, Crooked River Ranch
was purchased by the MacPherson's for development as a
recreational site. Rezoned in the early 1980's to Rural
